Hello Folks,
We had a good dry day on Saturday 17th February, 10 to Noon with 9 volunteers.
Tasks completed:
- One more hazel coppiced. Tidied up the coppiced hazel branches. Marian found a Looper caterpillar of Light Emerald moth on Kev which was rescued and put back on hazel twig.
- Large hazel logs made 2 upright log piles by digging hole and bury lower part. Drilled holes 5mm and 10mm diameter in hazel too as Solitary Bee hotel nesting sites.
- Tidied area for new pond. Vole spotted munching bramble leaf in ecoheap of branches and a boot scrapper was found under the Brambles, still functional! Area ready for check by Steve Catlin for fence design.
- Moved 1 Alder buckthorn to safe location.
- Added hazel logs with bee nesting holes to the bug hotel behind Bob's bench.
The upright log piles are inspired by the large installation at Rutland Water. Read more on that here:
https://greenergolf.co.uk/beetle-loggery-at-rutland-water/
So next time we have oak, birch, lime, beech we can make new upright log piles to add biodiversity. We wait to see what will use our Hazel upright log piles. I would like a small carved wooden Lesser Stag Beetle to sit on the log pile and am looking for a volunteer to carve one. Any offers?
Thank you all for your help and interest. See you soon.
Cheers,
Marian
